In tandem, For Freedoms Co-Founder Michelle Woo will moderate a panel discussion titled Imagining a Culture of Listening, Healing, Awakening, and Justice that will explore the role of artists in shaping society and politics at the fair on December 5 at 3pm. Panelists include artists Autumn Breon and Jesse Krimes, and curator, activist, and Founder and Co-Director of Project for Empty Space, Jasmine Wahi. This limited edition silkscreen print references how words can easily shape reality. When revisiting the work after making a billboard with For Freedoms in 2018, the artist shared “i grew up in an immigrant household and attended predominantly white deaf programs. i was taught that my asian american identity does not equal my deaf identity and should remain in the background. it took me years and years to recognize how erased our asian american experience is, let alone asian american deaf. the feeling of being unimportant still remains in me to this day and that is called a trauma. i grew up dealing with both casual and clear racism from classmates, neighbors, teachers, interpreters, church people, strangers, and even friends.” 
Christine Sun Kim is an American artist based in Berlin. Kim's practice considers how sound operates in society, deconstructing the politics of sound and exploring how oral languages operate as social currency. Musical notation, written language, infographics, American Sign Language (ASL), the use of the body, and strategically deployed humor are all recurring elements in her practice. Working across drawing, performance, video and large scale murals, Kim explores her relationship to spoken and signed languages, to her built and social environments, and to the world at large. 
Kim’s work speaks to ableist exclusion, while also celebrating the Deaf community’s perspectives and relationship to sound - ‘I was taught to believe that sound wasn’t a part of my life,’ – but she set out to reclaim Sound in her work stating that as a Deaf person, she wants to be as vocal as possible. The artist has exhibited and performed extensively nationally and internationally. She is represented by François Ghebaly Gallery in Los Angeles and White Space in Beijing.

APRIL BEY AfroPineapple Venus, 2023 18 x 23 inches Archival pigment print on Hahnemuhle Museum Etching paper Limited edition of 25 with 5 APs All prints signed and numbered by the artist  
Through an Afrofuturist lens, Bey reflects on subjects such as queerness, feminism, and internet culture in vibrant tableaux that combine living plants, video, music, photography, and oversized mixed-media paintings and textiles. The artist positions herself as an alien from the planet Atlantica, while her mission on Earth is to observe and report as an undercover agent. This imagined world and her general interest in storytelling come from her father, who would tell her childhood tales using alien narratives to illustrate how Black people were othered in the United States and The Bahamas. In contrast to the racial oppression and exploitation rampant on Earth, Atlantica offers a beautiful diasporic world in which Black people thrive and flourish.
Space travel is involved and expensive on Earth but on Atlantica, a spaceship isn’t the only modality of transportation. 5-7 plants of the calathea or pineapple variety grown together with high humidity and purple light will transport you between Atlantica and Earth in 30-90 seconds. Eleutheran Portal Growers from various time periods on Earth (Eleuthera, The Bahamas) tend to the AfroPineapple Venuses, which when grown can cut transportation time down to 5 seconds and leaves the traveler with moisturized pineapple-scented hair and skin.
April Bey grew up in The Bahamas (New Providence) and now resides and works in Los Angeles, CA as a visual artist and art educator. Bey’s interdisciplinary artwork is an introspective and social critique of American and Bahamian culture, feminism, generational theory, social media, AfroFuturism, AfroSurrealism, post-colonialism Speculative futurism and Blerd culture. Bey’s two-dimensional mixed media works and installations are from her ongoing Atlantica series. Bey incorporates fur, glitter, vinyl and woven textiles—materials rich in queerness—to craft icons around the images of real-life figures from her community. Bey’s work has been exhibited by and is in the collection of The California African American Museum, The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, The Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Escalette Collection, The 21C Museum, Museum of Art and History, Lancaster, CA, and more. Bey is currently a tenured professor at Glendale College.

Created specifically for For Freedoms, Green pastures and still waters, within your purview, is a silkscreen print featuring a woman sitting at her kitchen table framed by the window behind her displaying a scene of expansive land that is both tranquil and vast. A subtle light shines on her face, coming from the direction of her gaze. In addition to being inspired by color relationships, the artist has recently been interested in thought forms and their nature, particularly those thought forms employed to transcend oppression. Many of her paintings depict an inner journey, a character’s travels through space or time to find new doors, pathways, or perspectives. 
Hana Ward (b. 1989, Los Angeles, CA) makes paintings and ceramic works that explore themes of identity, introspection, and transformation. Appearing both ethereal and visceral, Ward weave together moods, motives and narratives to depict Black and Brown feminine figures who reflect and dream, creating their sovereign worlds from the inside out. These multitudinous visions of unfolding self-actualizations are sometimes sheltered in the solitude of domestic space and other times liberated into landscapes. Influenced by anticolonial histories, spiritual texts, and cycles of the natural world, as well as the canon of art history, Ward’s work excavates the inner dimension to discover a world where one’s sovereignty is in the here and now. Ward received a BA from Brown University in 2011 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Ward has exhibited at OCHI, Los Angeles, CA; Mrs. Gallery, Maspeth, Queens; Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA, among others, and her work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Financial Times, and Artforum, among others. .  
Hana Ward was awarded the For Freedoms x Converse <a href="https://www.forfreedoms.com/artworks/broccoli-pass">Hear Her Hear Mural Commission</a> in 2020, an ongoing initiative that helps propel more Black femme artists into spotlights, onto stages and at the heads of tables to make a positive impact on the communities we share. The artist states “I deeply believe in the creative power of imagination and affirmation, and using this creative power to imagine worlds and ways of being into reality. I love that For Freedoms is interested in collective expansion in this way, and in platforming artists and artwork that imagine what could be. “

Petra Cortright’s core practice is the creation and distribution of digital and physical images using consumer or corporate softwares. She became renowned for making self-portrait videos that use her computer’s webcam and default effects tools, which she would then upload to YouTube and caption with spam text. Cortright’s paintings on aluminum, linen, paper, or acrylic are created in Photoshop using painting software and appropriated images, icons, and marks. The digital files are endlessly modifiable, but at a “decisive moment” they are translated into two-dimensional objects. They become finite, yet their range of motifs and marks, and their disorienting perspectives and dimensions suggest dynamic change.
Hellscape Nº17 is based on the Banner that Cortright created as a part of the For Freedoms x A Cool Million project that was on display at Stanford University’s Cantor Arts Center. The invented landscape evokes the rugged scenery and wildfires of California, inspired by the basis of A Cool Million, a public arts initiative for climate awareness led by artists and institutions to expand environmental justice programming and support the conservation of one million acres of land central to the California hydrological system. 5 prints in the edition will include additional hand-painted elements, making each work unique.
Cortrights works are digital environments - almost every “element” of the work exists on its own separate layer - varying background images, mid-layers, and small detailed strokes. Her main medium is Photoshop, and she enjoys the process of sourcing images online or photographing with a cell phone or digital camera. She makes custom brushes in addition to downloading brush packs created by others, painting with varying Wacom tablets to produce different strokes.
Similar to how paint is traditionally used, Cortright creates digital underpaintings and structures to help build the work, but ultimately maintains all aspects as a record or map of how the file was constructed instead of compressing or melting into each other like an oil painting would. The artist shares “there are different paintings within the world of the file, within the “mother” file. I was very inspired by the 1956 documentary The Mystery of Picasso, that shows the evolution of his paintings and how they morph and change. The process of art making is so alive the entire time before you get to the finished piece and I want to celebrate process as well as exploit it to make a prolific amount of work.”
