Georgia native and NYU graduate, Eric Hart Jr., is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. As a photographer, Hart's stylized portraiture is an exploration of blackness and shifting identities within black culture. His visual language is influenced by the nuances of intersectionality. From masculinity, queerness, to dress, his work aims to display people like himself in all of their power and beauty. Hart's photo work has been published in publications such as i-D Magazine, The NY Times, The Washington Post, and Rolling Stone magazine, as well as praised by artists such as Beyoncé and Spike Lee. Hart is a two-time Gordon Parks scholar, 2022 Forbes 30 under 30 Art &amp; Style select, 2022 Doritos SOLID BLACK Changemaker and a For Freedoms x Google Image Equity Fellow.
Hart Jr.’s work is rooted in the amplifying of Black and/or queer liberation. He creates work from a place of wanting to reject control, exploring themes of power, beauty, and performance. His striking black and white portraits have a distinct visual language that portrays the artists message: “I, the outcast, am powerful, beautiful, and not the product of a world who has tried to label me.” 
When I Think About Power No. 1, from the When I Think About Power series, is an introduction to conflict. Reminiscent of Rodin’s The Thinker, Hart Jr.’s stylized portrait takes on a new form, juxtaposing pride and discomfort through his depiction of a male figure with a long white acrylic nails plagued worry on his face.  
Hart Jr.  was a part of the most recent cohort of For Freedoms x Google's Image Equity Fellowship supporting early-career image-based creators of color in the US and the expansion of a more equitable field of fine art. 
Hart Jr. notes “I am galvanized by the work For Freedoms does to create change in in this world. I am inspired by the organization’s messaging and artistic endeavors, which is not only beautiful and innovative in aesthetic, but it's powerful. It is intentional. It moves folks. Created in tribute to popular Sunday morning Christian attire, the subject’s eyes peak out delicately from underneath their hat. This powerful portrait depicts a queer being holding on to their religion despite the conflicts that may come with it.

When I Think About Power No. 37, 2021

MAYA JUNE MANSOUR I’m Still Here, 2022 24 x 16.5 inches Archival pigment print on Moab Slickrock Metallic Paper Edition of 2 Signed and numbered by the artist  
Maya June Mansour is a photographer originally from Nashville, TN with roots in Black America, Palestine, and Iran. Her current project, Light Brown Butterfly, investigates the long-term mental and spiritual impact of sexual assault. Using self-portraiture, Maya depicts her relationship with trauma through the lenses of anger, healing, and religion.
I’m Still Here features a small mirror with Mansour’s reflection. Her portrait is almost invisible against the larger interior space, alluding to the ways in which trauma can often be invisible on the outside. “When you have that kind of trauma it becomes a part of you, it informs everything,” Mansour says. “This photograph shows how it’s almost easy to look at a person and not see it—but once you see my face in the mirror, it’s impossible to miss.” Mansour was a part of the most recent cohort of For Freedoms Fellowships including Converse’s Hear Her Here, promoting the work of Black femme creatives, and Google's Image Equity Fellowship supporting early-career image-based creators of color in the US and the expansion of a more equitable field of fine art. 
Mansour notes “I feel very connected to For Freedoms both through my own art practice and through Black Image Center, the non-profit that I co-founded in 2020. Black Image Center is a community space for Black photographers and storytellers that has been supported by For Freedoms since day 1! My participation in For Freedoms’ fellowship programs has deepened my connection to the organization and has provided the resources and support to develop my skills and reach as an artist.”

EMANUEL HAHN The Lovers II, 2023 24 x 18 inches Archival pigment print on Canson Rag Photographique paper Edition of 7 Signed and numbered by the artist  
Emanuel Hahn (he/him) is a Los Angeles-based photographer/director interested in topics of identity, culture, diasporic experiences, and the question of what it means "to belong". His work America Fever is an ongoing staged narrative photo series that intersects Korean cultural and historical elements with mythologies of the American West in an exploration of Korean-American immigrant experiences in the 1970s. The title refers to citizens in postwar Korea who, inspired by the image of American culture, desired to immigrate to the US for a better life. These staged scenes reflect the luster and romance of an American West coming out of the Hollywood age.
Hahn’s work explores themes of cultural identity and the immigrant experience in the United States. He draws on history, archival photography, Western and Korean art, and personal memories to construct scenes that show different facets of the immigrant experience. He is interested in challenging simplistic notions of the American immigrant process - whether it's the model minority myth, or the bootstrap model - and also complicating the seemingly linear idea of assimilation.
Many Koreans in the post-war era were inspired to move to the US because of presentations of an American way of life, involving pop culture, fast cars, and fashion. In The Lovers II, the artist captures a young couple, newly immigrated to the United States, enjoying a taste of an idealized vision of Americana.
Hahn notes, “I align with For Freedom's mission of using art to educate and challenge our understanding of our country's history. I want people to dig deeper into the stories of minorities and the historically oppressed in the United States, to understand the systemic forces that hinder their progress. Finally, I hope that through the sharing of art, people feel empowered to adjust their attitudes and behaviors to effect positive societal change.”

A Cleveland, Ohio native Da'Shaunae Marisa (b.1996), is a multi-disciplinary artist based between New York, Cleveland and Los Angeles. Marisa uses her work to communicate the beauty and complexity of Black life in America and around the world. Her work explores the nuance of the connective threads between multiple generations and trauma. She intends for her work to inspire a greater sense of awareness in all humans alike. Marisa uses her lens in an intimate light while still grounding you to reality. The artist’s work has been featured in National Geographic, The New York Times, Aperture, Time, and Google, among others. Her commercial commissions consist of collaborations with Google, For Freedoms, Target, and SnapChat, among others. 
In Eli in Pink Bougainvillea, the artist captures her subject amongst a sea of flowers. This work alludes to the concept of returning to nature for solace by asking where do we find peace if it is not easily achieved in the mind? A place for silent solitude has the potential to uplift the spirit.
Marisa was a part of the most recent cohort of For Freedoms Fellowships including Converse’s Hear Her Here, promoting the work of Black femme creatives, and Google's Image Equity Fellowship supporting early-career image-based creators of color in the US and the expansion of a more equitable field of fine art.

McKayla Chandler is a multidisciplinary artist from Minneapolis, MN living and working in Los Angeles, CA. Her parent’s diligent documentation of Chandler’s childhood has played a vital part in the artist picking up her camera for the first time, leading to her desire to use the medium of photography to document the world around her in the same way her parents did, exploring themes of identity and home. Her photographs are rooted in self-exploration and reflect the artist’s curiosity and the way she witnesses growth in herself and her community. Combining portraiture, editorial, and archival imagery, Chandler’s goal is to continue to unveil the importance of documenting in real time, exploring what it means to have tangible photographs or artifacts passed down through generations, while adding to the contextualized history of image-making in the Black community. 
Madison and Aurora was taken in Chicago and captures the artist’s younger cousins for an ongoing series titled MOBETTA. Named after her mother Monshari, this series expands on her braid book while also creating spaces to carry storytelling traditions. The artist shares “this work emphasizes the importance of archiving intricate braiding styles in real time, while seeking to streamline the past to present occurrence of these designs. I chose to print on silk as a reminder of the precious fragility of such moments; to be a memory drifting in the wind, while also existing as a strong presence in our minds.” Chandler was a part of the most recent cohort of For Freedoms Fellowships including Converse’s Hear Her Here, promoting the work of Black femme creatives, and Google's Image Equity Fellowship supporting early-career image-based creators of color in the US and the expansion of a more equitable field of fine art. 
The artist notes “For Freedoms is about connectivity and at its core has an ethos that deeply resonates with a community approach to broaden that connection. Much like my continued exploration of self and the eagerness I have to tell stories, we both want to uplift voices and provide a platform/space for new ideas and worlds to grow. Hank Willis Thomas reinterprets familiar symbols, placing them in new contexts to evoke deeper meanings. The “Fragile, Handle with Care” labels, usually found aﬃxed on packages and used primarily for transportation, remind us of the delicate nature of the object(s) they protect. Thomas’ silkscreen print, however, prompts us to consider the fragility of democracy and our collective well-being, underscoring the extreme care required to preserve it. 
 With its monochromatic undertone, imprinted text and partially faded lettering, combined with its smeared appearance, Fragile, Democracy, Handle with Care, serves to remind individuals of the ongoing and historical importance in protecting our democratic rights. The print also serves as a call to action: a stark reminder of the fragile state of today’s democracy, urging us to handle it with extreme vigilance.  Conceived as an edition of 50, with each print oﬀering a unique colour and mark making variation, Edition 1 achieved $18,000 as part of the auction in support of the fundraising initiative Artists for Kamala and was featured on the cover of the New York Times Sunday Opinion Section on November 3, 2024. A portion of proceeds benefit For Freedoms.

This limited edition silkscreen print references how words can easily shape reality. When revisiting the work after making a billboard with For Freedoms in 2018, the artist shared “i grew up in an immigrant household and attended predominantly white deaf programs. i was taught that my asian american identity does not equal my deaf identity and should remain in the background. it took me years and years to recognize how erased our asian american experience is, let alone asian american deaf. the feeling of being unimportant still remains in me to this day and that is called a trauma. i grew up dealing with both casual and clear racism from classmates, neighbors, teachers, interpreters, church people, strangers, and even friends.” 
Christine Sun Kim is an American artist based in Berlin. Kim's practice considers how sound operates in society, deconstructing the politics of sound and exploring how oral languages operate as social currency. Musical notation, written language, infographics, American Sign Language (ASL), the use of the body, and strategically deployed humor are all recurring elements in her practice. Working across drawing, performance, video and large scale murals, Kim explores her relationship to spoken and signed languages, to her built and social environments, and to the world at large. 
Kim’s work speaks to ableist exclusion, while also celebrating the Deaf community’s perspectives and relationship to sound - ‘I was taught to believe that sound wasn’t a part of my life,’ – but she set out to reclaim Sound in her work stating that as a Deaf person, she wants to be as vocal as possible. The artist has exhibited and performed extensively nationally and internationally. She is represented by François Ghebaly Gallery in Los Angeles and White Space in Beijing.

Petra Cortright’s core practice is the creation and distribution of digital and physical images using consumer or corporate softwares. She became renowned for making self-portrait videos that use her computer’s webcam and default effects tools, which she would then upload to YouTube and caption with spam text. Cortright’s paintings on aluminum, linen, paper, or acrylic are created in Photoshop using painting software and appropriated images, icons, and marks. The digital files are endlessly modifiable, but at a “decisive moment” they are translated into two-dimensional objects. They become finite, yet their range of motifs and marks, and their disorienting perspectives and dimensions suggest dynamic change.
Hellscape Nº17 is based on the Banner that Cortright created as a part of the For Freedoms x A Cool Million project that was on display at Stanford University’s Cantor Arts Center. The invented landscape evokes the rugged scenery and wildfires of California, inspired by the basis of A Cool Million, a public arts initiative for climate awareness led by artists and institutions to expand environmental justice programming and support the conservation of one million acres of land central to the California hydrological system. 5 prints in the edition will include additional hand-painted elements, making each work unique.
Cortrights works are digital environments - almost every “element” of the work exists on its own separate layer - varying background images, mid-layers, and small detailed strokes. Her main medium is Photoshop, and she enjoys the process of sourcing images online or photographing with a cell phone or digital camera. She makes custom brushes in addition to downloading brush packs created by others, painting with varying Wacom tablets to produce different strokes.
Similar to how paint is traditionally used, Cortright creates digital underpaintings and structures to help build the work, but ultimately maintains all aspects as a record or map of how the file was constructed instead of compressing or melting into each other like an oil painting would. The artist shares “there are different paintings within the world of the file, within the “mother” file. I was very inspired by the 1956 documentary The Mystery of Picasso, that shows the evolution of his paintings and how they morph and change. The process of art making is so alive the entire time before you get to the finished piece and I want to celebrate process as well as exploit it to make a prolific amount of work.”

Ross McDonnell is a filmmaker and photographer born in Dublin, Ireland. Ross’ early experience of travel and his love of cinema sparked a fascination with image making and storytelling. His work reflects his interest in the open-ended nature of non-fiction and the tensions, inherent in the photographic process, between transience and permanence. He has witnessed firsthand the complex tapestry of migration and its profound impact on individuals as it compares and contrasts to his own experience as an Irish immigrant living in the US. 
DREAM channels the historical legacy of Irish immigrants who worked on the Transcontinental Railroad, serving to highlight the interconnectedness of both the artists’ past and present migratory experiences and those of his ancestors. The photograph was taken in 2019 while the artist was living in Mexico and working with Honduran migrants traveling to the US on La Bestia which translates to The Beast - a series of fast-moving freight cars that are so dangerous, they are known as death trains to the migrants who risk their lives in search of a better life. Featuring a migrant traveler laying atop La Bestia with DREAM in orange text in stark opposition to the lush green jungle that surrounds the seemingly meditative but extremely dangerous scene pictured. An immigrant himself, McDonnell reflects on the difference between his own journey to America and that of his ancestors and other migrants today who endure perilous journeys and risk their lives to seek refuge in the United States.
This signed fine art print is based off of the billboard that McDonnell created as a part of Silkroad’s American Railroad tour. Using a visual vernacular to tell stories of the fraught legacy of American Imperialism and the quiet histories of those who toiled to build this country, this initiative illuminates the impact the African American, Chinese, Indigenous, Irish, and other immigrant communities had on the creation of the U.S. Transcontinental Railroad and connecting railways in North America. Exploring the dissemination of cultures across the United States, the railroad was to North America what the Silk Road was to China, the Far East, and Europe. McDonnell’s billboard along with the three other For Freedoms x Silkroad Billboards will be on display in Los Angeles from October 30 – December 10, 2023.

From vast freestanding sculptures to intimate gallery installations, Nekisha Durrett’s work leverages unexpected materials to make visible the historical connections and connotations that places and materials embody, but are overlooked in our day-to-day lives. Whether reimagining pre colonial landscapes, bygone Black communities, or family lore, Durrett’s research-driven practice strives to carve out contemplative spaces and offer opportunities for viewers to consider what is revealed or concealed when information is filtered across time. 
Durrett earned her BFA at The Cooper Union in New York City and MFA from The University of Michigan School of Art and Design as a Horace H. Rackham Fellow.  She was the 2023 Howard University Social Justice Consortium’s (SJC) Artist in Residence Fellow. Her work is included in numerous private collections and public institutions, including The National Museum of African American History and Culture and The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.
Power Suit is a nod to the union of Pullman Porters called the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, and the artist’s grandfather, George Brown, who served as a porter in the 1930s. The activism of the Pullman Porters, led by A. Philip Ranolph, for fair pay and equal rights, changed the landscape and laid the blueprint for American Fair Labor practices. Their activism led to the creation of the Black middle class as well as the Labor Day holiday; as the first Black labor union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters was made up of men and women who were overworked, underpaid, and demeaned on a daily basis. 
Male porters were often referred to as "George" or "boy" by white travelers and train staff. This harkened back to the era of slavery as George Pullman was the owner of Pullman Sleeping Cars, so the moniker was intended to imply that these men were his property. The artist's grandfather has since passed on, but she wonders how he felt about his own name being used as a slur against him. To further personalize this tribute, the artist has included a nod to her grandfather; one of many letters that her grandmother wrote to him while he was traveling the rails sticks out of the pocket of the Pullman uniform - a small, and most likely imperceptible to passers by. In the letter, she wishes that she could hide inside his suitcase to join her husband.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach using video, sculpture, installation, movement, performance, and photography, Kenneth Tam examines themes including the performance of masculinity, the transformative potential of ritual, and expressions of intimacy within groups. Tam often implicates the male body in his projects, using humor and pathos to reveal the performative and unstable nature of identity, and often creates situations that foreground tenderness and vulnerability within unlikely settings. 
Tam received his BFA from the Cooper Union and his MFA in 2010. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Rice University, and faculty at The Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College. He has recently held solo presentations of his work at Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles; Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), Berkeley; The Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University, Ballroom Marfa, Texas; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tucson; Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Queens Museum, NY. Tam’s work is in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University.
This artwork was inspired by and features a quote from President Chester Arthur’s 1882 address to Congress, without them, nobody would do the work, where he pointed out the instrumental role of the thousands of Chinese migrant laborers who worked on the construction of the American Railroad. Tam created the original photograph in a tunnel constructed by these laborers in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Lake Tahoe, CA. While the quote specifically speaks about this group, it can be applied broadly to recognize all the migrant workers who have come to the US, taking on the indispensable and often physically demanding tasks and jobs that others have chosen not to do.

Created specifically for For Freedoms, Green pastures and still waters, within your purview, is a silkscreen print featuring a woman sitting at her kitchen table framed by the window behind her displaying a scene of expansive land that is both tranquil and vast. A subtle light shines on her face, coming from the direction of her gaze. In addition to being inspired by color relationships, the artist has recently been interested in thought forms and their nature, particularly those thought forms employed to transcend oppression. Many of her paintings depict an inner journey, a character’s travels through space or time to find new doors, pathways, or perspectives. 
Hana Ward (b. 1989, Los Angeles, CA) makes paintings and ceramic works that explore themes of identity, introspection, and transformation. Appearing both ethereal and visceral, Ward weave together moods, motives and narratives to depict Black and Brown feminine figures who reflect and dream, creating their sovereign worlds from the inside out. These multitudinous visions of unfolding self-actualizations are sometimes sheltered in the solitude of domestic space and other times liberated into landscapes. Influenced by anticolonial histories, spiritual texts, and cycles of the natural world, as well as the canon of art history, Ward’s work excavates the inner dimension to discover a world where one’s sovereignty is in the here and now. Ward received a BA from Brown University in 2011 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Ward has exhibited at OCHI, Los Angeles, CA; Mrs. Gallery, Maspeth, Queens; Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA, among others, and her work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Financial Times, and Artforum, among others. .  
Hana Ward was awarded the For Freedoms x Converse <a href="https://www.forfreedoms.com/artworks/broccoli-pass">Hear Her Hear Mural Commission</a> in 2020, an ongoing initiative that helps propel more Black femme artists into spotlights, onto stages and at the heads of tables to make a positive impact on the communities we share. The artist states “I deeply believe in the creative power of imagination and affirmation, and using this creative power to imagine worlds and ways of being into reality. I love that For Freedoms is interested in collective expansion in this way, and in platforming artists and artwork that imagine what could be. “

Antonius-Tín Bui (Bronx, 1992) is a polydisciplinary artist and shapeshifter invested in the transformative potential of improvisation, portraiture, craft, and ritual. Bui explores themes of eroticism, honoring ancestors and traditions, finding joy and potential in breaking, glitching, and illegibility and rebuilding from a fractured tongue/culture. They explore the porousness of skin, and how patterns, vessels, and other beings fuse into the flesh to acknowledge our interconnections in their work.
This print is a cyanotype of an existing hand-cut paper piece of the same title, ﻿Bui enjoys experimenting with the cyanotype process for many reasons including engaging with the history of photography and playing upon the color scheme of blue and white porcelain to emphasize the relationship between that pottery and a history of orientalism. This particular piece builds upon their previous works in which they hybridize the human form with Vietnamese vessels found in permanent museum collections around the world. The intentional shattering of these forms is a metaphorical way to free ourselves from systemic forces. Bui will embellish 5 prints in the edition with hand-cut elements, different paint washes, and gold leaf, making each unique. 
Bui’s intensive paper-cutting process is exceptionally meditative; each sheet of paper represents an archive of memories and oral histories, mirroring the intergenerational trauma that so many refugee communities are faced with. Through their rigorous and reductive process, they deconstruct the white canvas, metaphorically carving out space for the narratives that are so often omitted from recognized histories.  
They are the child of Paul and Van Bui, two Vietnamese refugees who sacrificed everything to provide a future for their four kids and extended family. Born and raised in Bronx, NY, Antonius eventually moved to Houston before pursuing a BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MIC/A).

Shinique Smith (b. 1971, Baltimore, MD) is known for her monumental sculptures and abstract paintings of calligraphy and collage. Inspired by her unique and magical childhood experiences, Smith has gleaned visual poetry from clothing and explored concepts of ritual using breath, bunding and calligraphy as tools toward abstraction. Her layered works range from palm-sized bundled microcosms to monolithic bales to massive energetic paintings that contain vibrant and carefully collected mementos from her life such as in By the Light. Smith has embellished five prints in the edition with swatches of fabric throughout the composition, making each unique.
Smith works at the convergence of consumption and spiritual sanctuary, balancing forces and revealing connections across space and time, race, gender, and place to suggest the possibility of new worlds. She intertwines personal histories and belongings with thoughts of the vast nature of ‘things’ that we consume, cherish, gift and discard and how these objects resonate on intimate and social scales.
Smith attended the famed Baltimore School for the Arts for high school, Maryland Institute College of Art, obtaining a BFA in 1992 and MFA in 2003. She also received her Master of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University and the Museum School in 2000. Jake Troyli (Boston, 1990) investigates otherness and the commodification of the Black/Brown body, confronting and exploring spectacle and sweat equity as a demonstration of value in his work. He explores performance, power, and the construction of identity through energetic paintings, often featuring a self-portrait or avatar of himself embedded in engaging scenes, with a markedly classicist approach. His works act as a trojan horse, with an attractive surface belying more complicated content underneath. 
Troyli expands the functionality and influence of his figures, imbuing them with new agency and establishing absurd narratives to consider the timeless conversations surrounding the preconceived notions of identity and value structures. Self-portrait as country club legend features his signature self-portrait while referencing Troyli’s own experience with sports. Notably, the artist played D1 basketball in college, which led to him developing a critical and complicated view of the dynamic between audience and athlete or performer, and what it means to be on display. This work depicts a tennis player, widely considered more of an upper-class sport, and Troyli has removed his tattoos and is playing dress up, exploring what it means to be a token, conflating race and class expectations through a single moment, arms raised holding his racquet. 
Troyli was deeply influenced by MAD magazine, political cartoons, and comic books as an accessible vehicle to help him build a visual language as he didn’t have access to contemporary art growing up. By appropriating motifs from both the classical and the comic, his work exists in a space that he hopes defies and subverts immediate assumption by utilizing self-conscious self-imagery and familiar language to navigate tense conversations between artist and viewer. His approach with techniques formalized during the High Renaissance, underpainting and toning are central to the conception of each work as a contrast to his interest in the use of satire and “low-brow” image-making, as well as a humorous delivery of information, to engage an audience in a way that feels accessible.
Troyli received his BA from Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, TN (2013), his MFA from the University of South Florida, Tampa (2019), and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, ME (2019).  He has exhibited at moniquemeloche gallery, Chicago, IL, (2020, 2022); The Milwaukee Museum, Milwaukee, WI, (2023); The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, KS (2023); Kavi Gupta, Chicago, IL, (2022); The Ringling Museum, Sarasota, FL (2021); Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa, FL (2019). Are you startled, does it make you laugh, does it provoke a smile on your face? Ideas. evolve, like drawings. This work has a rather long trajectory, collapsing cities, continents, and oceans in its flatness, reviving memories buried deep within its layers. Color, as its passionate companion, keeps pace and lingers on the paper surface now living as a silkscreen. Note: five prints in the series have been hand-embellished with diamond dust leftover and collected from Andy Warhol’s factory, making each print unique. 
Candida Alvarez (b.1955, Brooklyn, NY) is an artist whose primary materials are painting and drawing. Alvarez composes her abstractions from a personal narrative beginning with a collage-like exchange creating a pictorial space that eventually results in several layers overlapping. Color becomes the pictorial architect between shape and line, and abstraction becomes a sense of wonder that tracks the formal invention and lives within Alvarez’s compositions. 
Alvarez received her MFA from Yale School of Art, New Haven, CT (1997) and taught painting at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago for 25 years where she is now Professor Emeriti. Her work has been exhibited at ICA Boston, Kemper Museum, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, The High Museum of Art, Chicago Cultural Center, Hyde Park Art Center, New Britain Museum of American Art, The Fondation Vincent van Gogh Arles,  moniquemeloche, Gavlak, and Galerie Lelong, among others. 
Her work has been collected and also exhibited by the Whitney Museum of American Art; The Art Institute of Chicago; Peréz Art Museum Miami; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; El Museo de Barrio; The Studio Museum in Harlem; Seattle Art Museum; and DePaul Art Museum. Recent awards and fellowships include the 2022 Ford Mellon Foundation Latinx Artist Fellowship, 2022 Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Art, the Helen Frankenthaler Award for painting in 2021, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters &amp; Sculptors Grant in 2019. In 2023, Alvarez was artist in residence at Studio of the South/ LUMA Foundation Arles, France and at Skowhegan School of Painting &amp; Sculpture, ME.

The first monograph of the hundreds of billboards by artist-led coalition For Freedoms, the largest public creative collaboration in American history, published by Phaidon/Monacelli.  
Founded in 2016 by Hank Willis Thomas, Eric Gottesman, Wyatt Gallery, and Michelle Woo, For Freedoms is an artist-led organization that uses art as a catalyst for creative civic engagement, discourse, and direct action. 
With the aim to infuse an anti-partisan, arts-based perspective into the political landscape, For Freedoms has collaborated with thousands of artists, activists, and scholars to create more than 500 evocative billboards that use art as a vehicle to deepen public discussions on civic issues and core values.
This comprehensive volume includes billboards created between 2016-2023 by over 400 established artists, including Derrick Adams, Gina Belafonte, Sanford Biggers, Paula Crown, Shepard Fairey, Theaster Gates, Guerrilla Girls, Jenny Holzer, Rashid Johnson, JR, Christine Sun Kim, Marilyn Minter, Sofía Gallisá Muriente, Gordon Parks, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Maggie Rogers, Hank Willis Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, and Ai Weiwei, among many more.
This new book celebrates how For Freedoms has transformed public commercial space into exhibition space and launched a creative collaboration of epic proportion. For Freedoms: Where Do We Go From Here?

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? Tee

From 1999-2014, American artist and For Freedoms Co-Founder Eric Gottesman’s collaboration with Sudden Flowers, a collective of children living in Addis Ababa, produced a body of work of profound depth and poetic lightness. In reimagining the harsh realities the children experienced on the streets and in their homes in the wake of their parents’ deaths – including the trauma of grief, physical abuse and AIDS-related stigma – the young collective and Gottesman probed the possibilities of image making as a tool for self-expression, healing and teaching others. The Polaroid camera and peel-away negatives provided tools for recreating and alleviating the children’s deeply painful injuries.
Working together, Sudden Flowers and Gottesman ultimately discovered that photography could be a medium to express their resilience and hunger for life. Over the 15-year span of the work, Sudden Flowers and Gottesman produced exhibitions, short films and installations in Africa, the United States and Europe. In Sudden Flowers, the work of the entire project comes together for the first time in a book.
All books come with a unique envelope, handmade and decorated by the members of Sudden Flowers.

Sudden Flowers

A second edition of Helina Metaferia's monograph book, Generations, was released in Fall 2024, coinciding with the artist's solo exhibition at the Museum of African Diaspora, San Francisco, CA. The first edition was printed in 2022, coinciding with her solo exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA.
This 44 page soft cover saddle stitched book includes a portfolio of the artist's work since 2015. There is an interview between Museum of Fine Arts, Boston curator Michelle Millar Fisher, independent curator Chenoa Baker, and the artist on her practice, and an essay on her work by author and art historian Aruna D'Souza. The book was designed by Ramon Tejada, Associate Professor of Graphic Design at RISD.

Generations

Been Magic * Been Real is a limited edition risograph artists’ book and correlating exhibition by interdisciplinary Ethiopian-American artist Helina Metaferia. Modeled after traditional Ethiopian “magic” talisman scrolls, Metaferia makes a contemporary paper scroll book out of collaged images of Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC)women (cis and trans femmes) who have previously engaged in her By Way of Revolution social practice workshops around the country.
Protective iconography appropriated from the talisman scrolls adorn each image of the activists, who stand in historical revolutionary gestures. Crowd sourced text from her workshops and participatory installations are placed in sections where prayers are traditionally scribed. Bodily and performative in nature, Been Magic * Been Real is printed to scale of the human form, and can be hung as art, gazed upon, read, recited, or carried as armor in its portable carrying case as a wearable sculpture, much like the traditional scrolls it was modeled after. Like the original scrolls, the book functions as a “visual medicine” with a twist toward contemporary politics and social justice.

Through an Afrofuturist lens, Bey reflects on subjects such as queerness, feminism, and internet culture in vibrant tableaux that combine living plants, video, music, photography, and oversized mixed-media paintings and textiles. The artist positions herself as an alien from the planet Atlantica, while her mission on Earth is to observe and report as an undercover agent. This imagined world and her general interest in storytelling come from her father, who would tell her childhood tales using alien narratives to illustrate how Black people were othered in the United States and The Bahamas. In contrast to the racial oppression and exploitation rampant on Earth, Atlantica offers a beautiful diasporic world in which Black people thrive and flourish.
Space travel is involved and expensive on Earth but on Atlantica, a spaceship isn’t the only modality of transportation. 5-7 plants of the calathea or pineapple variety grown together with high humidity and purple light will transport you between Atlantica and Earth in 30-90 seconds. Eleutheran Portal Growers from various time periods on Earth (Eleuthera, The Bahamas) tend to the AfroPineapple Venuses, which when grown can cut transportation time down to 5 seconds and leaves the traveler with moisturized pineapple-scented hair and skin.
April Bey grew up in The Bahamas (New Providence) and now resides and works in Los Angeles, CA as a visual artist and art educator. Bey’s interdisciplinary artwork is an introspective and social critique of American and Bahamian culture, feminism, generational theory, social media, AfroFuturism, AfroSurrealism, post-colonialism Speculative futurism and Blerd culture. Bey’s two-dimensional mixed media works and installations are from her ongoing Atlantica series. Bey incorporates fur, glitter, vinyl and woven textiles—materials rich in queerness—to craft icons around the images of real-life figures from her community. Bey’s work has been exhibited by and is in the collection of The California African American Museum, The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas, The Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Escalette Collection, The 21C Museum, Museum of Art and History, Lancaster, CA, and more. Bey is currently a tenured professor at Glendale College.
